Project History, Oilfield and Gas

The following is a sample of the oilfield and gas projects performed by ACE Automation employees. In addition to programming, typical jobs required investigation of existing plant operations, writing of the functional specification for system design, engineering services, and installation of the hardware, user training, and startup.

Drill Ship Engine Control System – United Arab Emirates

Programmed the PLCs and designed Operator Interface screens for port and starboard engine control for twin hydraulic engine systems on a drill ship. The system used two IDEC PLCs with a Red Lion Operator Interface. Provided simulation support and training.

Automated Drilling Rig - Japan

PLC Program for Automated Drilling Rig – This system is controlled by a TI555 PLC using Profibus to communicate to the Siemens S7 remote bases. The system automates the functions of a pipe handling system, topdrive, crash avoidance system, mud pits, torque wrench and controlled drill system. Provided training and startup support in Japan. Programmed with APT, TISOFT, and Win Com200.

Natural Gas Compressor Station - Kansas

Wrote the PLC Program and Operator Interface for 3 Gas Reciprocating compressors. This system consisted of a TI545 PLC and an operator interface for each compressor. The purpose of this system was to automate the startup and shutdown of the compressors, and to provide closed loop torque control by adjusting the compression ratio of the engine cylinders. Upgraded older manufacturers program, and added over 50 analog equations for calculations of various operating parameters. Modified old manufacturer’s screens to meet the customers’ specific needs. Provided startup support and training. Programmed with APT and CTC Interact.

Automated Drilling Rig - Texas

PLC Program for Automated Drilling Rig – This system is controlled by an Allen Bradley PLC 5/30. The purpose of this system was to automate the functions of a pipe handling system, topdrive, crash avoidance system, and mud pits. Programmed the PLC, provided startup support, and created electrical drawings using AutoCAD. Programmed using Allen Bradley 6200 Programming Software.

Offshore Drilling Control System – North Sea

Converted an existing Allen Bradley PLC program to work in a Siemens 545 PLC. Expanded the program to include pipe string count and depth, drilling rate calculations, total weight, etc., and manipulated data for display on an HMI. Programmed in TISOFT.

Oil Well Drilling Ship – Venezuela

Programmed the PLC to control drilling operations, including precise monitoring of bit position during heavy seas. Used Peerlink communications for data transfer between two 545 PLCs to provide a “warm backup” system. Programmed in TISOFT.

Offshore Drilling Platform – Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela

Wrote systems to control SCR drives for the 2000 HP top drive and rotary table systems. Merged this software into existing drill control system software. Programmed in TISOFT for a TI545 processor.

Offshore Drilling Platform – Gulf of Mexico

Developed bulk tank storage software to measure volume and height of product in seven large conical and cylindrical tanks. Merged this software into an existing TI545 program.

Offshore Drilling Platform – Gulf of Mexico

Wrote a program to control all SCR driven devices: Mud pumps, top drive, drawworks, and rotary table. Multi step sequential startup and shutdown was used for safe operation. Regenerative braking and load power shaving software was developed. Programmed in TISOFT for a TI555 processor.

Back when equipment was built by hand, workers would proudly sign their work by placing brass nameplates on their products. ACE Automation carries on the tradition, showing the spirit and pride represented in our work by adopting the brass plate as our symbol.
